Argentia
Just five minutes from Placentia, Argentia’s history is intertwined with the town’s story.
Originally settled by the French in the 1630s as ‘Petit Plaisance,’ Argentia played a key role during the Second World War with the establishment of Fort McAndrew under the Land-Lease agreement. The American presence profoundly influenced Placentia’s economy and social landscape, with lasting impacts on families and communities.
Since the decommissioning of the base in 1994, Argentia has emerged as a hub for industrial, manufacturing, and marine development. Its strategic location, deep-water port, extensive infrastructure, and skilled workforce continue to drive economic opportunity for Placentia and the surrounding region. Today, the Port of Argentia is a thriving center for marine transportation, construction, fabrication, oil and gas services, and more.
