Tourism Accommodation Tax
What is the Tourism Accommodation Tax?
The Tourism Accommodation Tax is a 4% fee applied to the base nightly rate of short-term accommodations. This tax is collected by accommodation owners/operators and remitted to the Town. For example, a $120.00 nightly rate would result in a $4.80 tax per night (30 nights booked = $144.00). Please note that this tax applies only to the base rate and not to the HST-inclusive total.
Who is required to collect and remit this tax?
This tax applies to all short-term accommodation providers, including:
- Bed & Breakfasts
- Short-term residential rentals (Airbnbs)
- Campgrounds and RV Parks
- Hotels and Inns
- Motels
- Hostels
When are payments due?
Remittances are required quarterly, according to the following schedule:
- July 31
- October 31
- January 31
- April 30
How do I remit payment?
To submit your payment:
- Complete the Placentia Tourism Tax Remittance Form
- Email the completed form to: [email protected]
- Upon receipt, an invoice will be issued
- Payment can then be made promptly either in person at Town Hall or by telephone.
What happens if I do not remit the tax?
The Tourism Accommodation Tax is mandatory. Failure to remit may result in the Town estimating the amount owed based on the number of units, a reasonable nightly rate, and full occupancy for the quarter. Outstanding balances will also incur interest at a rate of 1% per month until paid in full.
How will these funds be used?
All revenue collected through this tax will remain within the community and be reinvested to enhance tourism and local economic development.
These funds may support:
- Tourism promotion and marketing initiatives (promotional materials, videos)
- Improvements to tourism-related infrastructure and public spaces (trails, benches)
- Community events and festivals that attract visitors
- Enhanced visitor services and amenities (public washrooms, Wi-Fi, gazebos)
- Local development initiatives that strengthen the visitor experience
This initiative represents an investment in the future of Placentia. By supporting tourism, we help create more opportunities for local businesses, generate employment, and encourage sustainable economic growth that benefits residents and visitors alike.
